What does art mean to you? Are you using your artist potential?
In my research I found these question in a Deviant Art blog and I loved them. I thought this was a very important step before we get started.
These are 10 benefical questions artist should ask themselves...
Here's 10 important questions to ask yourself. Read them constantly as a checklist to make sure your are heading in the right direction and using your artistic potential.
1. What motivates you to create art? Write down your answer and think about how you can use this very important information.
2. What kinds of information have you been putting on the internet? The internet is the new resume. If I can find dumb pics or comments from you then other people can too... Do you have a website or Facebook page that you show your work to the public? As a professional artist if your work isn't seen you don't make money. Research some ways to get your art in front of people. Write down some possibilities. Write an artistic resume. Here are some examples: https://resumegenius.com/resume-samples/artist-resume-example

Art Showings
(here at school and in town or elsewhere)
Include any showings of your work and where your work can be seen (include shows for school and your digital website)
On your digital portfoilio include your resume and shows in new tabs.
3. Does your art express something interesting? Great art means something to its viewers, not just its creator. What does your art communicate? How would you change it to give it more meaning to you and the viewer? In your document give examples of your work and discuss how you would change your work to give it more meaning.
4. Does failure push you forward? How you deal with failure will determine how skillfull you will become. Tell me about the last time a work of your art failed and what it taught you? How did this failure affect your next piece? If possible show a photo of the work.
5. Do you enjoy defaming artist work? If you are the type of person to hate on others, it will come back to you. Especially with the internet and all the social networking. When viewing others work one should critique it constructively and never defame their work. Find a work of art that you don't really understand and discuss it using the elements and principles to discuss the artist's choices in a constructive way. Include a photo of the work. Instagam or internet as source.
6. Do you try out new methods/materials/subjects that might be uncomfortable at first? Success is inevitable if you always choose to believe "It is my obligation to try." Tell me about the last new medium you tried and how it felt to work with it. Did you research the new new method or material before beginning? Did you try it in you sketchbook first? Find a new method or material and research this unfamiliar method. Write down what are some steps in your sketchbook from your research. Sketch something in your sketchbook that could work as a composition for this method. This will be something we continue at a future date.
7. Do you have a strong purpose or goal? When you have a purpose, you stand by it. Something special happens when you show an undying drive to achieve a goal. What are your goals as an artist?
8. Are you open to meeting new people and hearing others opinions with an open mind? Your heart & mind are the gates to success & happiness. Keep them open or miss out on great opportunities. Where could you as an artist go to meet people to advance your career? Are there groups for artist in the area? How do artist get work? Include your research in this document.
9. You can either let your environment shape you or choose YOURSELF to be who you want to be. The body & mind can be shaped into almost any type of person you wish to be. You just have to train it through persistence. What kind of artist and person do you want to be? What are some paths you should take to achieve you being your best self and artist? (Education, classes etc.)
10.Do you constantly think about your goals? The best way to accomplish a goal is to have it on your mind all the time. Keep thinking about it until you obtain your goal. I'm not the first to say this one but I can't emphasize it enough. Life isn't just going to happen and go your way, you have to WANT to achieve your goal and make it happen.
This should help each of you write your artist statement. If you have one rethink your statement. Does this information still hold true about who you are as an artist or have you changed as an artist. I have had several statements in my lifetime because I am always changing as an artist. Because what I once believed about my art and my purpose for creating has changed because I have GROWN and so will you. Include your artist statement in this document and on your digital portfolio.
Once you answer this questions about yourself as an artist in a google doc switch pages and let's add your artist statement and resume.
